Do outboard motors need water
Jul 16, 2023| External engines are one of the indispensable components on a boat, they need water to cool their engines and provide lubricant to keep the boat running smoothly. So, do external engines need water? The answer is yes.
In fact, external engines require two types of water. The first is an external source of water used to cool the engine, usually a lake, river or ocean. This water enters the engine from the water pump, then cools it, and then flows out of the rudder. If there is not enough water to cool the engine, it will overheat and may cause damage.
The second type of water is engine oil, which must be changed regularly. Engine oil is used to lubricate the engine and reduce wear. If the external engine does not have enough oil, the engine may rust or overheat.
Regarding the water demand of external engines, the following points should also be noted:
1. Make sure that the input water of the engine is clean, otherwise it will easily block the water channel, resulting in poor water flow, which will affect the operation of the engine.
2. If the boat is in storage, the external engine water pump and cooling system can be flushed and drained to avoid freezing of the water in the water pipe and pump when the boat is not in use.
3. Before starting the external engine, please make sure that the water discharge is at least 2 inches above to avoid running the engine in a dry state and causing the engine to overheat.
4. If the water temperature gauge indicates that the engine is overheating, turn it off immediately and check if the cooling system is working properly.
5. Regular external engine maintenance and inspection can help you keep abreast of the engine condition and ensure the normal operation of the engine.
All in all, external engines need water for cooling and lubrication and to ensure that the engine runs smoothly during operation. If not handled properly, it can lead to engine overheating, rust and other damage. Therefore, regular maintenance and inspection will help ensure that the external engine performs well during its lifetime.
